Day One Complete at MAAC Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. - Niagara senior swimmer Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) earned a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, rewriting a record he rewrote earlier in the day. The senior finished the championship heat in 20.87, three one-hundredths of a second better than his prelim time, which is a Niagara school record.

The Purple Eagle men finished day one in fifth place with 84 points, five points behind Saint Pter's in fourth. The women came in with 91 points and sixth place, nine points behind fifth place Fairfield and 12 behind Iona in fourth.

Two ther records fell and numerous swimmers qualified for ECACs next weekend. The men's 200 free relay team of James Polito (Reading, Pa.), Evinn Drusys (Yucaipa, Calif.), Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Garvey set a new school record at 1:25.89, besting the old mark of 1:26.05.

Dana Vernal (Milford, Conn.) set a new record in the 500 free when she finished fifth with a time of 5:09.79.

Brown finished 11th  in the consolation finals in the 500 free after swimming a 4:46.70 and was good enough for an ECAC qualifying time.

Kevin Betts (Victor, N.Y.) and Ryan O'Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y.) reached the consolation finals of the 200 IM. Betts bested his teammate, finishing 14th with a time of 2:01.02, while O'Laughlin came in at 2:03.05.

The men's 400 medley relay came in seventh, while the 200 free relay qualified for ECAC's

On the women's side, Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) .came in 12th with a season-best 5:18.64.

Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Piggott (Staatsburg, N.Y.) came in eighth and ninth respectively in the 50 free. Clingersmith finished in 24.73, while Piggott touched the wall at 24.87. Both swimmers qualified for ECAC's with their times.

Both the women's 200 free and the 400 medley relay finished sixth.

The Purple Eagles continue the MAAC Championships through Saturday.
