BALTIMORE, Md. - Niagara senior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) set a Niagara Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record with 45 points in the men's basketball team's (15-8, 9-5 MAAC) thrilling 92-87 victory over conference rival Loyola on Sunday. Fisher scored Niagara's first nine points and drained on an off-balance, one-handed jumper with 1:07 left to seal the victory and the series sweep of the Greyhounds on their home floor.
The victory moves Niagara into a three-way tie in the conference at 9-5 with Loyola and Marist. It also gives NU the tie-breaker over the Greyhounds, via the season-sweep.
Hofstra's Jim McCaffrey scored 46 points in a MAAC game in 1985 to set the conference mark.
"For us to have the courage and the fortitude to come in here and win after a tough loss on Friday speaks volumes," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "It's a great win for this team."
Fisher had the hot hand early and often for the Purple Eagles. The 6-foot-3 senior shot 15-of-27 from the floor and made four three-point baskets in the win.
His biggest shot came at the 1:07 mark with NU leading 84-81. Though he faced constant double teams in the second half, Fisher found himself in one-on-one coverage from Loyola's Hassan Fofana with the shot clock winding down. Fisher, the nation's leading scorer entering the game, used a cross-over dribble to shake Fofana and swished an off-balance, one-handed shot to seal the victory.
"Whenever I play against [Loyola], I get a little more fired up," Fisher explained. "I had good looks in the first half, and my teammates found me in the second half while I was double teamed on the wing."
Fisher's 45 points shatters his previous career-high of 36 points set earlier this year against Rider. His 15 field goals is a career-best and is the second-most total by a Purple Eagle since the formation of the MAAC Conference.
The Purple Eagles shot 69.0 percent from the floor in the first half to open a 12-point lead at the break. Loyola fired back in the opening portion of the second half, but Fisher and his supporting cast would not allow the Purple Eagles to lose this crucial conference contest.
Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) tallied 20 points in front of 75 of his closest friends and family members, while Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) added 17 points on 5-of-17 shooting in the win.
