Third Period Outburst Leads Men's Hockey Past Colonials

Juliano Pagliero

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Niagara University Purple Eagles (6-6-1; 2-1-0 CHA) used a three-goal outburst in the third period to defeat Robert Morris (3-8-2; 1-1-1 CHA) 4-2 in Niagara's first road CHA game of the season on Friday night.

Down 2-1 to start the third period, a strong play along the boards by Paul Zanette (Nobleton, Ont.) allowed him to get the puck to Brian Dowd (Buffalo, N.Y.), who would fake a shot and pass it over to fellow freshman Wes Consorti (Brantford, Ont.), who would tie the game on his second goal of the season within the first three minutes of the third period.

The Purps would take the lead for the second time, when Niagara's career goal-scoring leader Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) added his 73rd career goal, short-handed, on a centering feed from Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.). Cook's game-winning goal was the 10th of his career, placing him in a fifth place tie for career game-winning goals, along with Barret Ehgoetz and Joe Tallari.

Tyler Gotto (Calgary, Alb.) would score his first goal of the season, when he ripped a slap shot to give Niagara a 4-2 lead just eight minutes into the third period.

Purple Eagles head coach Dave Burkholder was happy with his team's ability to hang tough during an important game.

"It was a very thorough effort tonight," Burkholder said. "I like how our team was playing tonight and it resulted in, by far, our best third period of the season."

Both teams started the game by trading quick rushes, providing quality scoring opportunities. Senior netminder Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) was stellar in the first period, including breaking up a Robert Morris offensive flurry, where he made two quick saves to keep the game scoreless.

A little over halfway through the first, Armando Scarlato (Toronto, Ont.) legged the puck to the net before getting tripped up, with the puck squirting back to junior Ryan Olidis (Uxbridge, Ont.), who would notch his third goal of the season by firing the puck past Colonial netminder Wes Russell. The Colonials would tie it at one late in the period, with Jason Towsley tucking the puck past Pagliero while creating traffic in front of the net.

The second period saw the Colonials take a 2-1 lead, with Nathan Longpre scoring on a floater that got past Pagliero. Longpre's man advantage tally was the first time in 25 attempts that an opponent has scored on the power-play against Niagara, with the last time coming against R.I.T. on Nov. 7.

The Purple Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., when they take on Robert Morris again.
