JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Niagara men's soccer team (11-5-3; 5-3-1 MAAC) finished the regular-season on the short end of a 2-1 decision to the Saint Peter's Peacocks (9-8-2; 5-4-0 MAAC).
Niagara's loss, combined with a Fairfield win puts the Purple Eagles as the fourth seed for next weekend's MAAC Championships, hosted by Marist College. The Purps will take on regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Loyola College in the semi-finals at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
"It was a difficult game in tough weather conditions," head coach Dermot McGrane said. "In the first half against the wind we defended well, and in the second half with the wind to our back we created several chances but couldn't put it in the back of the net. We have a week to prepare for the MAAC Tournament, taking on Loyola in what will be a tough game. "
The Purps started out quick, as Eric Brodfuehrer (Tonawanda, N.Y.) notched his ninth goal of the season in the 16th minute, scoring from inside the box. The Peacock's would respond just three minutes later, evening the game on a one-timer by Udi Naim. With about 10 minutes left in the first half, Saint Peter's took a 2-1 advantage, when Rumen Kerekov scored from 10 yards out.
The Purple Eagles had several chances to tie the game, but fell short. Niagara took 12 shots in the second half, with the six on target all being stopped by Peacock goalkeeper Hernand Santamamaria.
The Purple Eagles finished the regular-season tied for most wins in a single-season with the 1970 squad that was led by head coach Alphonse Montagna, a team that went 11-3.
