Men's Hockey Drops Canisius 5-2

Egor Mironov

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Purple Eagles (4-5-1; 0-0-0 CHA) scored three short-handed goals in a span of 69 seconds in order to defeat cross-town rival Canisius (3-3-2; 2-1-1 Atlantic Hockey) 5-2 before a sell-out crowd of 2,100, which included a Dwyer record 684 students.

Niagara scored all three short-handed goals in the second period, starting with Niagara's Derek Foam (Mississauga, Ont.) being whistled for interference at the 11:55 mark.  Sam Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) converted on a two-on-one with Danny Baco (Buffalo, N.Y.) to give Niagara the 3-0 lead just 27 seconds into the penalty kill. Thirty-three seconds later, Egor Mironov (Thornhill, Ont.) jetted in alone on goal and beat Canisius netminder Andrew Loewen for the 4-0 lead.

Niagara would score its third consecutive short-handed goal when senior defensemen Dan Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.) took a wrist shot from the point, that beat newly-inserted Golden Griffin netminder Taylor Anderson high, glove side.

Niagara's short-handed output was the second time in NCAA history that three short-handed goals were scored on the same minor penalty kill, something that has head coach Dave Burkholder excited.

"Lately, our penalty kill has been a difference maker," Burkholder said. "On the penalty kill, guys like [Egor] Mironov and [Wes] Consorti made good plays."

The Purple Eagles started the game with a quick goal to go up 1-0, as Wes Consorti (Brantford, Ont.) caused a turnover in the Canisius zone, which he then fired past an unsuspecting Loewen just 1:48 into the game. Ryan Olidis (Uxbridge, Ont.) would score his second of the season late in the period to put Niagara up 2-0 at the end of one, despite being outshot 13-5.

The Golden Griffins would score twice in 50 seconds in the third period to cut the margin to 5-2, but they would come no closer. Mironov and Sullivan each finished with a goal and an assist, while Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) again rose to the task, making 32 saves in the victory.

The last time three short-handed goals occurred on the same penalty kill was in 1988, when C.J. Young netted all three himself in 49 seconds, between the end of the second period and the start of the third period. Harvard went on to become the National Champions that year.

The Purple Eagles get 10 days off before returning to the ice to finish its four-game homestand, as they open up CHA play against Bemidji State on Friday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22.
