NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Despite playing in front of the third soldout crowd of the season and in front of a nationally televised audience, the Niagara men's basketball team (10-4, 4-1 MAAC) had three winning streaks snapped with a 94-84 loss to Siena (9-6, 4-1 MAAC) on Friday. Just a two point game at the half, the Saints used a 15-2 run to open the second stanza and pulled away for the victory.
Siena, the preseason MAAC favorite, shot 53.3 percent from the floor (32-60) and 63.2 percent from behind the arc (12-19) to end a trio fo Niagara streaks. The Purple Eagles entered the game winniners of 14 consecutive against MAAC opponents, 11-straight inside the Gallagher Center, and six in a row overall.
"At the start of the second half, there were three possessions where we did not defend well," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said, "and they capitalized. They proved that they are the best team in the league right now."
Senior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.), the nation's leading scorer, totaled 31 points on 9-of-21 shooting. He added seven rebounds and a team-high three steals in the loss. The Saints' defense swarmed Fisher throughout the contest, but the 6-foot-3 forward still managed to record his fifth 30-point game of the season.
The Saints were led by sophomore Edwin Ubiles' 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Last season's Co-Rookie of the Year buried open jumpers in the paint and was 4-of-6 from long range. Senior Tay Fisher, who was held scoreless in the first half, added 18 points in the victory. Fisher was 4-for-4 from behind the arc, including three three-pointers during the key 15-2 stretch.
Junior Benson Egemonye (Benin City, Nigeria) recorded his second-straight double-double in a losing effort with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Purple Eagles outrebounded Siena 45-33, including a decisive 25-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
Freshman Anthony Nelson (Plainfield, N.J.) scored a career-high 14 points for Niagara while tying a career-high with seven rebounds. Senior Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench after missing the last contest with an injury to score 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting with three assists.
The Purple Eagles are back in action with a 2 p.m. start against Manhattan College, Sunday, inside the Gallagher Center.
