Men’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker at Bucknell

Levi Tesch

LEWSIBURG, Pa. – The Niagara men’s soccer team (1-4-1) let up for just a moment, but it was all Bucknell (2-3-3) needed as Niagara fell to the Bison, 1-0, on a last-minute goal Sunday afternoon.

"Conceding a goal in the last two minutes is a very disappointing way to lose," head coach Dermot McGrane said. "The majority of the game I thought we played pretty well, but one lapse in concentration cost us the game."

Niagara nearly took the lead shortly before half time when freshman Levi Tesch (Wolcott, N.Y.) got by his defender and had only the goalkeeper to beat. However Tesch’s shot from 12-yards out went just wide.

The Bison’s goal came at the 88:07 mark when Corey Curnutte crossed the ball into the box for Justin Wolf, who slid and just got his foot on the ball and knocked it past Niagara’s goalkeeper John Fiutowski (Ottawa, Ont.). Fiutowski made seven saves on the day, bringing his season total to 58.

Immediately following the Bison’s goal, the Purple Eagles had a chance to tie the game, but Tesch’s header was knocked down by a Bucknell defender and collected by the keeper.

The Purple Eagles return to Monteagle Ridge for a five-game homestand that kicks off Friday, Sept. 28, with St. Bonaventure, followed by Robert Morris on Sunday, Sept. 30.
