BALTIMORE – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted 11 top-10 finishes Friday on the second day of the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at Loyola College. Both Purple Eagle squads are in fifth place in the championship.
Junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) finished second in the 100 fly, posting a season-best 51.29. Sophomore Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) also posted a second-place finish, swimming a season-best 11:08.17 in the 100 breast. Emily Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) finished ninth in 1:10.12.
In the 200 free, sophomore Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) finished seventh (1:46.26) and sophomore Joe Moeller (Bethel Park, Pa.) was eighth (1:48.26).
Rookie Fiona Barrass (Port Perry, Ont.) and senior Heather Link (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) were sixth (1:02.31) and seventh (1:02.70), respectively in the 100 backstroke.
In the relays, the men’s 800 free relay of Garvey, freshman Ryan O’Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter), junior James Polito (Reading, Pa.) and Brown were four hundredths of a second off the school record, swimming a season-best 7:03.10 to place fourth. The women’s 800 free relay was fifth in 8:12.16.
The women’s 200 medley relay placed third in 1:52.14 and the men’s seventh in 1:39.99.
The MAAC Championship in the Loyola Fitness and Aquatic Center continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
