BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s basketball team (16-11, 11-5) won its fourth consecutive game with a thrilling 89-88 overtime win over Canisius College (11-15, 6-10) Tuesday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The win was Niagara’s ninth consecutive over Canisius and gives the Purple Eagles a sweep of the two-game series.
Junior forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) equaled his career high with 33 points as he sank a season- and career-high 12 foul shots. Senior forward J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) made a career-high tying five three-point field goals, four in the first half, to go with 11 rebounds. Both totals were season-high marks for Duffey, who had his third double-double of the season and sixth of his career.
Senior forward Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) recorded his 12th double-double of the season and 18th in his career with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Brown sank one of two foul shots with 5.8 seconds left to give Niagara an 89-85 lead before Canisius’ Frank Turner banked in a three-pointer with 5/10ths of a second remaining for the final margin.
Fisher, who scored 17 of Niagara’s first 32 second-half points, gave Niagara a 72-70 lead with two free throws at 3:13 to play. Senior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) sank a baseline jumpshot with 44.3 seconds remaining to give Niagara a 76-73 lead before Corey Herring sank a three-pointer to force overtime.
Brown gave Niagara an 83-81 lead in the extra session with a three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:41 to play. Fisher added two foul shots for an 85-81 lead. Freshman Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) sank a foul shot before hitting a running jumper with 11.6 seconds remaining for an 88-83 lead. Chuck Harris brought Canisius within three, 88-85, with a layup with 6.8 seconds left. Brown then hit one of two free throws before Turner’s three-pointer.
Herring led Canisius with 25 points while Turner added 22 points and 11 assists. Harris scored 18 points while Darnell Wilson recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Purple Eagles used a 14-0 run in the to pull out to a 40-30 halftime lead as Brown and Fisher combined for 11 points. Niagara held Canisius without a field goal for the half’s final 6:37. Fisher and Duffey each had 12 points in the first 20 minutes.
Niagara returns to action Saturday when it hosts Liberty University in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. at the Gallagher Center.
