BALTIMORE – Two more school records fell as the Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams placed fifth and sixth, respectively on the final day of competition the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at Loyola College Saturday.
Junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) broke his third school record in as many days, breaking his own 100 free mark with a 46.37 in the preliminaries. He finished second in the finals, swimming a 46.44.
Freshman Fiona Barrass (Port Perry, Ont.) broke Melissa Sargent’s 1993 200 backstroke school record when she swam a 2:12.67 to qualify fifth in the event. The rookie placed eighth in the finals, swimming a 2:14.44.
Other top-10 finishers included sophomores Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) and Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) who placed ninth (18:09.90) and eighth (17:02.94), respectively in the 1650.
Freshman Dan Killin (Edmonton, Alb.) was seventh in the 200 back (2:03.80), rookie Ryan O’Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) sixth in the 200 fly (1:59.40) and freshman Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) sixth in the 100 free (54.40).
Junior James Polito (Reading, Pa.) was eighth in the 100 free (48.69) and sophomore Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) was fourth in the 200 breast (2:30.15).
In the 400 free relays, the men’s team finished fifth (3:11.01) and the women’s squad seventh (3:44.56).
Numerous Purple Eagles return to action when they participate in the ECAC Championships.
