Records Fall for Niagara University Swimming and Diving

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - It appears that freshman diver Ian O’Rourke (Grand Island, N.Y.) has set a trend for the Purple Eagles swimming and diving teams; setting new records. This continued as both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in competition this past weekend.

The men competed Sunday at the University of Vermont’s Forbush Natatorium against St. Michael’s College and dominated the meet winning all 13 events en route to a 178-44 victory over the Purple Knights.

They were led by four double winners, senior Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 200 free and the 500 free, senior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) in the 50 free and the 100 free, sophomore Ryan O’Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y.) in the 200 IM and the 100 fly, and O’Rourke in the 1 and 3 meter dives. O’Rourke’s score of 292.55 on six dives in the 1 meter earned him another Niagara University diving record.

"The victory was a total team effort," said head coach Ben Nigro. "I am very pleased with how the guys raced."

The Purple Eagle’s women’s team had a grueling weekend as they competed against three different opponents in two days. Niagara dropped the first meet against the University of New Hampshire at Siena College’s Swim Center, 139-78 as the Wildcats placed first in 12 of the 13 events.

Junior Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) was the lone winner for the Purple Eagles against the Wildcats, winning the 500 free with a time of 5:23.46. Wiles continued her winning ways against Siena later on, winning the 1000 free and the 500 free despite a 132-108 loss to the Saints.

The women’s final meet of the weekend saw them heading to the Forbush Natatorium to take on the University of Vermont. Unfortunately for Niagara, the Catamounts won the meet 140-83, placing first in 11 of the 13 events.

That was not going to stop Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) from highlighting the weekend as she broke Forbush Natatorium’s 100 breast record with a time of 1:08.49. The previous record was 1:09.19.

Both squads return home Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Oxy Aquatic Center to face off against Waterloo University. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
