Power Play Prowess Propels No. 19 Men’s Hockey Past Colgate, 3-2

Chris Moran

HAMILTON, N.Y. – A pair of late power-play goals lifted the No. 19 men’s hockey team (12-6-3) over Colgate (9-11-2), 3-2, Friday at Starr Rink. The victory gave Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder his 100th career win.

"It’s an honor," Burkholder said. "It just shows that I was surrounded by dedicated young men and great coaches."

The Purple Eagles trailed throughout the contest, but turned to their potent power play to claw out the victory. Freshman Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the game winner on the advantage with 6:49 remaining in the third period, and the rookie had a hand in all three tallies for the Purple Eagles, finishing with a goal and two assists. After winning the initial faceoff on their final power play, Niagara kept the puck in the zone firing shot after shot at Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich. The first five shots sailed wide and were stopped, but the sixth shot was Moran’s laser from the point that snuck past the goalie for the game winner.

Sophomore Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) upped his nation-high goal total to 20 with a pair of power-play goals from practically the same spot on the ice. He also leads the nation with 13 power-play goals.

"What a courageous road victory for our guys," Burkholder added. "We trailed the majority of the night, but we persevered. Our power-play definitely got the job done, but there’s not a guy in that locker room that didn’t lay their heart on the line tonight. It was just a terrific team effort."

After taking a pair of penalties early in the first, Colgate broke through just as the second one was expiring. Jesse Winchester flipped the puck over the right shoulder of Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) for the 1-0 lead. The Raiders immediately picked up their first of nine penalties, a five-minute major for checking from behind, when Ben Camper took a shot on senior Sean Bentivoglio (Thorold, Ont.).

Cook made Colgate pay, firing a one-timer past Dekanich from the right faceoff circle, evening the score at 1-1. Trailing 2-1 in the third period, the sophomore found himself in the same faceoff circle, again on the man advantage. This time Cook waited for an opening and fired a wrist shot to even the score at 2-2. Four minutes later, Moran ended the scoring with his power-play marker.

Sophomore Les Reaney (Ceylon, Sask.) picked up an assist on Cook’s second goal to up his conference-leading point total to 35. It was Cook’s fifth multiple-goal and 11th multiple-point game of the season.

Pagliero made 28 saves in the win, despite leaving the net for six minutes in the first with a separated shoulder. He returned to pick up his fourth-straight win and ninth overall.

The Purple Eagles, who are 13-3-3 all-time as a ranked team, continue their New York road trip with a 7 p.m. tilt at RIT, Saturday.
