Fisher Scores Career High in Loss to Siena

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – A career-high 28 points by junior forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) was not enough for the Niagara University men’s basketball team (7-7, 2-2 MAAC) Friday night as the Purple Eagles dropped a 92-81 decision to Siena College (8-5, 4-0 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Gallagher Center.

Fisher also snared 11 rebounds to go with his 28 points for his first double-double of the season and third in his career. The 28 points marked his fifth game this season scoring 20-or-more points. Senior forward Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) recorded 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his fourth-straight double-double and seventh of the season. Classmate J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) scored 17 points while Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) added 15. Junior Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) had a game-high eight assists.

Edwin Ubiles led Siena with 23 points. Michael Haddix added 21 points while Kenny Hasbrouck and David Ryan scored 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Siena used a 13-6 run to take a 19-11 lead with 12:50 to play in the first half. Haddix scored Siena’s first six points before Ryan picked up 11 of his points during that run. The Purple Eagles answered with seven-straight points, five via Miles. The teams eventually battled to a 30-30 tie with 4:59 left in the half after Miles converted a conventional three-point play. The Saints then took a 41-35 lead after four-straight points by Mike Beers. Brown sank two foul shots before Duffey hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer for the 41-40 halftime score.

The Purple Eagles opened the second half with a 10-2 run as Miles sank a layup for a 50-43 lead with 17:16 to play. Haddix sank two foul shots to tie the game, 54-54, with 14:26 left after Niagara was called for an intentional foul. On the ensuing possession, Ubiles drove for a layup to give the Saints a 56-54 lead with 14:22 remaining,

Ubiles and Haddix then scored 13 of Siena’s next 15 points as they opened a 71-63 lead when Haddix sank a short jump shot with 8:55 left. The Purple Eagles got within five, 74-69, after a Brown basket with 5:41 remaining but Niagara could not get any closer.

Niagara returns to action Jan. 9 when it hosts Fairfield at 7 p.m. at the Gallagher Center.
