Fisher Scores 33 Points in Upset Win over Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) scored a career-high 33 points to help the Niagara University men’s basketball team (11-10, 6-4) upset Marist College (15-6, 7-3), 83-75, Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at the McCann Center.

Fisher was 10 of 15 from the field, 5 of 5 from three-point range and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds and classmate Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) had 15 points.

The Red Foxes were led by senior Jared Jordan’s 31 points while Ryan Stilphen added 20 points.

Marist’s Will Whittington sank his lone three-pointer at 6:46 to tie the game at 61. Fisher then scored 13 points of Niagara’s 14 points to give Niagara a 66-61 lead with 4:40 left. The Purple Eagles pushed their lead to nine points when freshman Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) fed a wide-open Brown for a dunk at 2:04.

Marist cut the lead to five points, 77-72, when Whittington sank two of his five free throws with 31 seconds left. Niagara then sank six of eight free throws to hand the Red Foxes their first loss of the season in the McCann Center.

Niagara opened with an 11-4 run when three of its first four shots were three-pointers. Marist came back to take an 18-16 lead when Jordan capped a 12-5 run with a layup at 9:21. The Purple Eagles then came back with an 11-4 run to take a 27-22 lead on a Fisher three-pointer with 4:25 remaining.

Marist used six points from Jordan in an 8-3 run to take a 31-30 with 55 seconds left, but freshman Rydell Brooks (Akron, Ohio) sank a pair of free throws to take a 32-31 lead at halftime.

Niagara returns to action Sunday when it plays Fairfield University at 1:30 p.m. at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
