NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams (3-5, 3-2 & 4-5, 3-2) each earned a victory Friday as they took down cross-town rival Canisius College (1-8, 0-4 & 2-9, 1-4). The men’s team won, 147-72, while the women’s team won, 127-98.
The Purple Eagle men almost completed a near sweep of their events, placing first in 12 of the 13. The team was led by junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) who finished first in the 50 free (21.93) and the 100 free (55.17). Senior Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y.) swept the diving portion of the competition as he scored 212.03 points on the one meter and 240.68 points on the three meter.
The women’s team was led by sophomore Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls). Wiles finished first in the 200 free (2:03.33) and the 500 free (5:29.39). Clingersmith recorded three victories for Niagara as she won the 50 free (25.57) and 100 free (55.17), and was on the first-place 400 medley relay team (4:10.88).
The Purple Eagle women’s swimming and diving team returns to action Saturday as they face Siena College at 1 p.m. The men’s team will be back in action Jan. 23 as they travel to Olean, N.Y., to face Big Four rival St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m.
