NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s (2-5, 2-2) and women’s (3-5, 2-2) swimming and diving teams compete against their final league opponents before the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships when they host Canisius College (1-7, 0-3 & 2-8, 1-3) Friday at 6 p.m. and the women host Siena College (1-5, 0-2) Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Oxy Aquatic Center located in the Kiernan Recreation Center.
Both Purple Eagle teams look to snap three-meet losing streak after losing to Loyola College, Marist College and the University of Delaware at the H2ounds Invitational Dec. 1.
Junior Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) enters this weekend’s meet coming off a pair of victories at the H2ounds Invitational. He won both the 200 IM (1:58.78) and the 100 fly (52.79) events. Additionally, he was the lead-off on the second-place 800 free relay team. Garvey along with sophomores Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.), Joe Moeller (Bethel Park, Pa.) and freshman Ryan O’Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y./Lewiston Porter) finished in 7:10.44.
On the women’s side, sophomore Allison Carr (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) also enters both meets this weekend with a season best under her belt. She swam a season-best 2:29.93 in the 200 breaststroke to finish second and was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.87) at the H2ounds Invitational.
The women’s 200 medley relay team of freshman Fiona Barass (Port Perry, Ont.), Carr, rookie Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and senior Heather Link (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) was third in 1:53.96.
The Canisius men’s team will be looking for its first MAAC win of the season. They enter Friday’s meet on a losing note after falling to St. Bonaventure, 169-64, on Dec. 10. The women’s squad also lost to the Bonnies, 147-76, but it does have a league win, beating Saint Peter’s on Nov. 11.
Siena is the lone team this weekend that finished the first half of the season with a win. The Saints beat Sacred Heart, 75-59, on Dec. 9.
Both Niagara teams beat Canisius earlier this season. The men won, 133-88, and the women, 126-91, on Nov. 11. Against Siena, the Purple Eagles women’s team has won the last two meets, including a 179-98 victory last season in Loudonville.
