Gartley Scores Two Goals in First Conference Win

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) scored two goals in Niagara University’s (5-3-0, 1-0-0) 5-0 shutout of Saint Peter’s College (2-8-0, 0-1-0) Friday afternoon in the Purple Eagles’ first women’s soccer Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season.

Gartley, who scored two goals in her last game on Sept. 24, gave Niagara the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute off a cross from junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.). The goal was Gartley’s second consecutive game-winning goal.

The forwards second goal made it 4-0 in the 58th minute when she piveted toward the goal at the 18 yard line and shot a low blast past Peahen keeper Jilian Fueshko.

Bisnott scored Niagara’s first second-half goal early to boost the Purple Eagles’ lead to 2-0. The junior placed the ball in the lower left-hand corner of the net when she took a shot from the top of the box off a pass from senior Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.).

Sophomore midfielder Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored her first goal this season, third of her career with a shot in the upper right corner of the net off a lead pass from Montgomery in the 55th minute. With two assists on the day Montgomery has five assists for the season and 21 for her career, ranking her third in the Niagara record books.

Montgomery made it a four-point day when she scored her fifth goal of the season and Niagara’s final goal in the 70th minute. The midfielder scored on a shot in the upper right side of the net after a pass from senior Jenna Sporta (Oakville Ont.). Montgomery’s 19th career goal ties her for ninth in the Purple Eagles record books for career goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) made one save to earn her second consecutive win and post her first collegiate shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Susan Conroy (Endicott, N.Y.), entered the game in the middle of the second half and recorded one save.

Saint Peter’s Fueshko recorded 11 saves.

The purple Eagles return to action Sunday at noon when they host Manhattan College.
