ALBANY. – Siena College (15-12, 10-8) out-scored Niagara University 11-5 in double overtime to post a 98-92 win Saturday night in a men’s basketball Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Pepsi Arena.
Leading 93-92, Antoine Jordan sank two free throws to snap an 88-88 tie. Junior J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) gave Niagara a 90-89 lead with a layup, but Kojo Mensah pushed the Saints back on top with two free throws.
Siena made it 93-90 with 2:06 left when Mousse Diop scored on a layup, but junior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) sank two free throws to cut the lead to one, 93-92.
Jordan then scored on a layup with 46 seconds remaining, and Tay Fisher made it 96-92 sinking the second of a two-shot foul with 14 second remaining. Jordan then sealed the win with a pair from the foul line with three seconds remaining.
In regulation, Siena forced overtime when Kenny Hasbrouck hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining. Niagara got the ball back with two seconds left, but a Brown layup roll off the back of the rim.
In the first overtime, the teams traded baskets until the Saints got a layup from Mousse Diop and a free throw from Mike Beers to take an 87-85 lead. Brown sent the game into double overtime with a layup with 30 seconds on the clock.
Junior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) scored a game-high 26 points, hitting a career-high six three-pointers that helped move him into fourth on the program’s career treys list. Senior James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) posted his fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and a season- and game-high 15 rebounds. Brown collected his sixth double-double of the year with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Duffey scored 16 points and sophomore Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) tied his career high in assists with nine.
Niagara posted its second 50-plus rebound game with 51 boards, including 23 offensive, but the Purple Eagles also suffered from 17 turnovers.
The Purple Eagles return to action Friday when they play in the first round of the 2006 Citizens Bank MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship in Pepsi Arena.
