MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Senior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) recorded his second collegiate double-double to help the Niagara University men’s basketball team (4-6) extend its winning streak to three games with a 80-73 victory at Central Michigan (4-6) Saturday afternoon in Rose Arena.
Miles recorded 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Purple Eagles while junior Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) had a game-high 23 points. Senior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) added 18 points and junior Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) had a game-high nine assists.
Miles and Brown combined to score 15 points during a 19-3 second-half run that gave Niagara the lead for good.
Trailing 43-42 with 14:30 left, Miles had a jumper, Fisher a dunk and Miles sank one of his three three-pointers to push the lead to 49-43. Brown scored four more points and Miles added two more to give Niagara a 10-point lead, 59-49, at 9:46. Brown’s dunk at 8:25 gave the Purple Eagles their largest lead, 61-49.
Central Michigan responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to five points after a pair of free throws from Justin Blevins. Sefton Barrett had a layup at 4:29 to make it 64-60, but Niagara answered with six-straight points from freshman Rydell Brooks (Akron, Ohio), Duffey and Miles to extend the lead to 70-60.
Barrett again made it a five-point game, 70-65, when he sank a three-pointer with 1:21 left. Fisher and Brown made four free throws to make it 74-65, but the Chippewas got a pair from the foul line and a three-pointer from Jordan Betzer to make it 74-70 with 34 seconds remaining.
Niagara outscored Central Michigan 6-3 in the final 31 seconds for its fourth win of the season.
The Purple Eagles return to action Dec. 28 when they participate in the La Salle Explorer Classic. They meet Delaware in the first game at 8 p.m.
