NIAGARA UN., N.Y. – The University at Buffalo (6-2) opened the second half with a 13-5 run to take a 44-32 lead and the Bulls never looked back in recording a 74-62 non-conference win over Niagara University (1-4) Saturday night at Alumni Arena.
Senior forward Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) had a team-high 17 points while freshman Tyrone Lewis (Levittown, Pa.) added 13 points and rookie Rydell Brooks (Akron, Ohio) tied his career high with 12 points.
Buffalo’s Yassin Idbihi recorded a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Greg Gamble added 15 points while Andy Robinson and Parnell Smith scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Purple Eagles started the game with the hot hand from beyond the three-point line, sinking their first five three-pointers to open a 19-7 lead with 13:58 to play on a Miles’ three-pointer. Duffey and Miles each hit two three-pointers in the game’s first six minutes. Niagara scored seven-straight points on the break when Duffey sank a three-pointer from the top key before Lewis and Brooks had a dunk and layup, respectively.
Niagara would make only three more field goals for the rest of the first half as UB tied the game, 25-25, when Gamble sank a baseline jump shot with 5:53 left. Idbihi gave UB a 27-25 lead when he sank a short jump shot with 3:03 left. Smith then drove the lane for a 29-25 lead. Hodge sank two foul shots before Gamble’s baseline jumper beat the horn for the 31-27 halftime score.
After UB’s second-half opening run, Niagara used a 7-1 run to make it 48-39 after a Brown steal and Lewis dunk. UB answered with an 8-0 run for a 56-39 lead when Gamble scored with 11:48 remaining. Lewis keyed a 10-3 Niagara run as he scored five points to bring Niagara within nine, 59-50, after a Brown basket.
Buffalo then coasted to the final margin.
Niagara returns to action Dec. 6 when it opens the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a 7 p.m. game at Siena College in the Pepsi Center.
