ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two goals just 37 seconds apart in the first period was all Colgate University (1-2-0) needed to slip by Niagara University (1-2-0) Thursday night in a non-conference men’s hockey game at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
"We didn't have a lot of scoring chances, but the one's we did have didn't go in," Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder said. "It was a winable game, but it just didn't happen for us."
Jason Fredricks posted the Raiders’ first goal at 3:52 when his slap shot deflected off a Purple Eagle defender that beat Niagara goalie Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) just below the cross bar.
Colgate took a 2-0 lead when Peter Bogdanich picked up a loose puck to the side of the Niagara net and stuck it past Pagliero at 4:29.
Niagara cut Colgate’s lead to one at 8:44 of the third period when sophomore Les Reaney (Ceylon, Sask.) netted his second goal of the season and first on the power play. Rookie Chris Moran (Buffalo, N.Y.) passed to sophomore Ted Cook (Hogansburg, N.Y.) to the right of Raider netminder Mark Dekanich, and Cook found Reaney in front of the net where he slammed the puck past Dekanich.
Pagliero and Dekanich each made 21 saves in net.
Niagara returns to action Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross in the Dwyer Arena opener at 7 p.m.
