Iona Downs Niagara in Overtime, 71-69

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Iona College guard Ricky Soliver scored all seven of the Gaels’ points in overtime, including a steal and layup with two seconds remaining, to lead Iona to the 71-69 overtime win over Niagara University Friday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at a sold-out Gallagher Center.

Soliver was one of three players to score 15 points for Iona (15-3, 9-1). Niagara, which falls to 6-12, 3-7, was led by Clif Brown’s (Ferndale, Mich.) game-high 16 points.

Niagara forced overtime when sophomore forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) hit a running one-handed jump shot with less than two seconds in regulation to tie the game at 64-64. Fisher recorded his seventh double-double of the season as he finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Purple Eagles used 11 first-half points by Brown to take a 36-23 lead at halftime. Iona opened a 5-2 lead before Niagara responded with a 32-13 run for a 34-18 lead when Fisher scored with 4:24 left. Niagara then went scoreless for the next four minutes before Fisher snapped the streak with a putback with six seconds left.

Iona kept chipping away at the Niagara lead before tying the score 48-48 when Steve Burtt sank a three-point field goal with 9:45 remaining in regulation. The Purple Eagles twice took a four-point lead, the last being 61-57 with 3:15 to play, before Fisher tied the score.

In overtime, Soliver and Brown traded baskets as the score was tied 69-69 with 1:32 left on a three-pointer by Brown. Neither team could capitalize on turnovers before Soliver stole an in-bounds pass and streaked for the game-winning layup.

Juniors J.R. Duffey (Fort Worth, Texas) and Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) had 12 and 10 points, respectively for the Purple Eagles. Miles also added five assists.

Niagara hosts Rider Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gallagher Center.
