BUFFALO, N.Y. – Points came early and often as the Niagara University men’s basketball team defeated Canisius College, 93-84, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Tuesday night at the Koessler Athletic Center. The game was broadcast live on ESPNU.
Junior forward Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) had a career-high 25 points while sophomore forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) added 24 points. Fisher had 19 of his points in the second half while Brown netted 18 in the first half. Junior guard Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) recorded 19 points as the Purple Eagles won their third-straight game and improved to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the MAAC. Canisius falls to 4-11 and 3-4.
Niagara used back-to-back three-point field goals by Brown and junior guard Barry Durosier (Orlando, Fla.) to take an 82-73 lead with 1:48 remaining. The nine-point lead was the Purple Eagles’ largest of the game at the time. The Purple Eagles made 11 of 12 foul shots in the final 62 seconds with Fisher sinking 7 of 8.
Brown scored 18 points off of the bench in the first half. He sank all four three-point field goal, the third giving Niagara a 31-29 lead with 5:59 to play in the half. Brown made 7 of 9 shots in the half. Miles also had a hot hand early as he scored 11 of Niagara’s first 17 points. The duo sank 7 of 9 three-point field goals in the half as the Purple Eagles had a 45-39 lead at the half. Senior forward James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) also had 11 points and seven rebounds.
In the second half, Canisius used an 8-0 run to tie the game, 65-65, when Jon Popofski converted a conventional three-point play with 7:33 to play. It was the third tie of the contest. The teams traded baskets until Brown sank two foul shots and Fisher followed with a conventional three-point play to give the Purple Eagles a 72-67 lead with 4:39 to play.
Mathis had 15 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 6:10 left.
Fisher had nine rebounds to power the Purple Eagles as Niagara had a 38-24 rebounding lead. Fisher also added three blocked shots while sophomore Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) had a team-high five assists.
Canisius was led by Kevin Downey’s 23 points.
Niagara will play Rider at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, N.J., Friday at 7:30 p.m.
