Fisher, Miles Power Niagara Past Loyola, 75-72


Sophomore Charron Fisher recorded his fifth double-double of the season Saturday night.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) scored a team-high 26 points and snared 11 rebounds to lead the Niagara University men’s basketball team to a 75-72 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Loyola College (Md.) Saturday night at the Gallagher Center. Niagara improved to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in MAAC play while Loyola is 10-4, 4-2.

Fisher recorded his fifth double-double of the season while junior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) had 20 points and nine rebounds.

Loyola’s Andre Collins had a game-high 36 points to lead the Greyhounds.

Niagara junior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) dunked on an in-bounds pass from sophomore Stanley Hodge (Washington, D.C.) to give Niagara a 40-38 lead with 15:02 to play. The Purple Eagles never trailed again. Niagara pushed its lead to 10 points, 62-52, when Miles sank a long three-point field goal with 3:26 remaining. Loyola cut the lead to three, 66-63, when Shane James scored with 1:08 left.

Miles sank two foul shots with 56.8 seconds remaining and then added two more with 45.6 remaining to push the lead to 70-63. Loyola would again cut it to three points, 73-70, when Collins sank a three-pointer with 7.8 seconds left. Fisher sank two foul shots with 5.6 left before Collins scored with one second left on the clock.

Fisher blocked six shots to set a career high. The six blocks were the most this season by a Purple Eagle and the most since Juan Mendez blocked five shots against Loyola, Jan. 30, 2005.

Niagara will face Canisius College in the Koessler Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

  • Niagara won its second in a row at home for the first time since it beat Canisius (2/16/05) and Siena (2/7/05).
  • Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich recorded his 55th career home conference win.
  • Senior James Mathis played in his 100th career game tonight.
  • Mihalich started a lineup of sophomores Stanley Hodge and Charron Fisher, juniors J.R. Duffey and Lorenzo Miles, and senior James Mathis. The lineup is 3-6 thiis season.
  • Fisher registered his fifth double-double of the season against Loyola with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He registered his fourth double-double at Loyola earlier this season.
  • Fisher recorded his fifth 20-point game of the season.
  • Fisher recorded a career-high 12 free throws on a career-high 17 attempts.
  • Miles tied a team season high with four three-point field goals.
  • Clif Brown had six rebounds, pushing his career total to 201.
  • Hodge had a career-high four rebounds.
  • Mathis sank his second three-pointer of the season, tying his career high.
  • Fisher had a career-high six blocks, all of the Purple Eagles’ blocked shots in the contest. Niagara also blocked six shots against Fairfield (1/12/06).
  • Greg Noel tied his career high in minutes, playing four in the first half.
