NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (5-7, 1-6) lost its final game of the 2005 season, 25-12, at Le Moyne (10-5, 5-2). The 25 goals are the most ever surrendered in a single game in Niagara’s 10-year history.
Prior to today’s game, the most goals Niagara allowed in a single game were 24 in a 24-5 loss to Mount St. Mary’s, April 5, 1997. The game’s 37 goals ties Niagara’s record for the most goals scored in a single game. The record was originally set in a 19-18 overtime loss at Wagner, April 19, 1997.
Outshot, 43-22, Niagara suffered its fifth-straight loss and sixth in its last seven. It was the first time since 1998 the Purple Eagles failed to earn at least two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference wins.
Le Moyne opened the game’s scoring with three-straight goals to take a lead it would never relinquish. Freshman Emma-Lee Harrison (Lakefield, Ont.) and sophomore Liz Johnson (Canton, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals before Le Moyne recorded another three-straight. Harrison notched three goals in the game, setting a new Niagara record for most goals scored in a single season by a freshman with 28, beating the original mark of 26 originally set by Mary Cutia in 1997.
Down 12-6 at halftime, Niagara let up four-straight goals – all scored by Le Moyne junior Liz Hewitt - to start the second half. The Purple Eagles responded with four of their own goals, including back-to-back goals from sophomore Lindsay Hamann (Camillus, N.Y.).
After trading goals, Le Moyne tallied the game’s next eight goals before Niagara senior Rachel Jones (Amherst, N.Y.) scored with three seconds remaining in regulation. Her two goals in the game gave her 25 on the season, securing her position as the third-highest goal scorer in Niagara history with 87 goals in 52 career games. Senior Ashley Baker (Henrietta, N.Y.) tallied a goal and two assists in the game, giving her 70 goals in her career - good for seventh on Niagara's all-time list. She totaled the third-highest total assists in Niagara's history with 58 and ranks sixth on Niagara's all-time points list with 128.
Niagara senior Kristin Engel (Plainview, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the loss, while Le Moyne’s Samantha Falcone and Kelly Comley combined to make six saves in the win.
