NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Despite five goals by senior Rachel Jones (Amherst, N.Y.), the Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (5-6, 1-5) dropped its fourth-straight game Saturday, 18-13, to the Saints of Siena (9-6, 5-1).
Jones is just one goal shy of tying Ashley Grosso as Niagara’s third-highest goal scorer in Niagara history. Jones currently stands with 84 goals in 51 games.
Niagara took the early lead as sophomore Lindsay Hamann (Camillus, N.Y.) tallied the first of her three goals at the 28:28 mark of the first half. It was the only lead Niagara would enjoy, as Siena sophomore Christina Pampalone registered back-to-back goals to put Siena up 2-1. Pampalone finished the game with seven goals and an assist, bringing her season’s point total to a team-high 50 points in 15 games.
Siena’s Michelle Eide and Niagara’s Liz Johnson (Cortland, N.Y.) traded goals before the Saints went on a 7-1 run to build a commanding 10-3 lead with 4:31 remaining in the half.
Niagara senior Ashley Baker (Henrietta, N.Y.) scored at the 1:00 mark and Jones scored the first of three straight goals to make it 10-5 at intermission.
Jones’ two goals to start the half brought the Purple Eagles to within three at 26:08, but the team would get no closer. Siena maintained its offensive pressure throughout the second half and a 4-1 run beginning at the 6:51 mark sealed the victory for the Saints, as two Niagara goals in the closing 1:25 weren’t enough.
Niagara junior Miko Daluisio (Lancaster, N.Y.) registered a game-high six draw controls and tied Baker for a team-high six ground balls.
Niagara sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Engel (Plainview, N.Y.) finished the game with five saves, while Siena goalie Bethany Zimmer made nine saves in the win.
Niagara competes in its final game of the 2005 season Sunday at Le Moyne, beginning at 1 p.m.
