NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (5-3, 1-2), fell, 15-13, to Fairfield University (3-10, 1-3) Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Stags.
Sophomore Lindsay Hamann (Camillus, N.Y.) scored the first of her three goals at 21:54 to give Niagara the 2-1 lead, but 32 seconds later Fairfield’s Sarah Masterson began a four-goal run for the Stags, giving them the 5-2 lead midway through the half.
Niagara responded with three-straight goals, including back-to-back goals by Hamann, knotting the score, 5-5, at the 9:07 mark.
Both freshman goalkeepers remained perfect for the remainder of the half, as Niagara’s Whitney Gill (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Fairfield’s Kristin Genovese finished the first 30 minutes with seven and six saves, respectively.
Niagara regained the lead on a goal from freshman Emma-Lee Harrison (Lakefield, Ont.) at 26:55 of the second half, but it was the last time the Purple Eagles would be in front.
Fairfield tallied nine of the game’s next 11 goals to take a commanding 14-8 lead with 7:51 remaining in the game.
Senior Rachel Jones (Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored her second of the game at 6:02 before Fairfield’s Ashley Chappell scored her game-high fourth goal and seventh point of the game.
Niagara freshman Katie Gates (Penn Yan, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals at 4:14 and 3:58 and sophomore Liz Johnson (Cortland, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals at 2:34 and 1:15, but time ran out on the Purple Eagles as they dropped their second of three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games this season.
Gill finished the second half with seven saves for a game total of 14, while Genovese posted one save in the latter 30 minutes to finish the game with seven saves.
Niagara continues its road trip Sunday, facing Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., at 1 p.m.
