Niagara Women’s Lacrosse Earns One-Goal Victory Over Iona

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (5-2, 1-1) earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win with a 7-6 victory over Iona College (3-7, 0-2) Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

The Purple Eagles were held scoreless in the second half until Niagara senior Ashley Baker (Henrietta, N.Y.) took a pass from sophomore Lindsay Hamann (Camillus, N.Y.) and scored the game-winning goal with 5:08 remaining in the game.

Baker also scored to begin the game, notching her season’s 12th goal at 27:34 of the first half. Hamann put Niagara up, 2-0, at 24:46 before Iona got on the board at 21:47. The teams traded goals until sophomore Liz Johnson (Cortland, N.Y.) notched her second goal of the game to give Niagara a three-goal lead. Freshman Emma-Lee Harrison (Lakefield, Ont.) scored with 44 seconds remaining in the half to give the Purple Eagles the 6-2 halftime lead.

Iona scored four unanswered goals in the second half to tie the game at 6-6 with 6:11 remaining, before Baker tallied her second of the game.

Niagara freshman goalie Whitney Gill (Canandaigua, N.Y.) make eight saves in the win, while Iona’s Roxanne Monte made nine saves in the loss.

Niagara hits the road next weekend for two MAAC contests, playing at Fairfield, April 16 and at Marist, April 17.
