Niagara Finishes Fifth, Seventh at MAAC Swimming Championship


Senior Traci Liberi captured her second title of the MAAC Championships, winning the 100 free Saturday.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished in fifth and seventh place, respectively at the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships at Loyola College Saturday.

The men’s squad improved one place from its 2004 standings while the women’s squad placed seventh for the second consecutive year.

On the final day of compeition, senior Traci Liberi (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) captured the 100 free title for the second time in her career. She posted a season-best 53.56.

The women’s 400 free relay team of Liberi, sophomore Heather Link (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), Mariah Glass (Oswego, N.Y.) and Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) broke the school record with a 3:40.59. The old record was 3:42.62 set in 2003.

For the championship, the men’s and women’s squads combined to qualifie for the ECAC Championship in 12 individual events and eight relays, set seven school records, posted 52 lifetime-bests and 52 season-best times.

The ECAC Championship is scheduled for Feb. 25-27 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
