Garvey Set Second School Record at MAAC Championship


Sophomore Heather Link was part of a second school record Friday.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) set his second Niagara University school record Friday at the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships at Loyola College.

Garvey, who broke the school record in the 200 IM on the first day of the conference meet, placed third in the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.53. The rookie’s mark tops Chris Vondering’s record of 52.19 set in 1994.

The women’s 200 medley relay of sophomore Heather Link (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), senior Karolina Bazylewicz (Buffalo, N.Y./Hutch Tech), sophomore Jodi Kennis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and senior Traci Liberi (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) broke the school record with a 1:51.88 to place third.

Senior Brian Griffin (St. Petersburg, Va.) finished as the MAAC runner-up in the 100 breaststroke for the second consecutive year. He swam a career-best 1:00.35.

In the team standings, the Purple Eagle men’s team remains in fifth place with 218 points and the women are still in seventh with 173 points.

Competition continues Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Loyola Fitness and Aquatic Center.
