Men’s Basketball Wins Season Opener at Binghamton


Charron Fisher opened his sophomore season with a game-high 20 points at Binghamton.

VESTAL, N.Y. – With four players scoring in double figures, the Niagara University men’s basketball team (1-0) recorded a 71-56 non-conference victory over Binghamton University (0-1) in front of 4,073 fans in the Events Center. The victory snapped a two-game season-opening road losing streak for the Purple Eagles.

Sophomore Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J.) scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 shooting from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-3 guard also collected a career-high nine rebounds. Junior Lorenzo Miles (Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 18 points and posted personal bests at the foul line, going 11 of 12. In his Niagara debut, junior Clif Brown (Ferndale, Mich.) tallied 11 points and senior James Mathis (Newark, N.J.) added 10 points and seven rebounds.

"I’m really proud of our team to be as tough as we were, as intense as we were and just take care of business," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said.

The Purple Eagles blew the game open in the second half. Leading by just 10, 48-38, with 12:40 left, Niagara went on a 21-9 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 69-47. Brown scored nine of his 10 points during a seven-minute stretch while Fisher added seven.

Binghamton’s last lead of the game was in the first half when the Bearcats were up 20-19 with 6:48 remaining. Niagara took control with a 14-4 run to close the half. Miles helped fuel the run with five of his 10 first-half points coming from the charity stripe.

The Purple Eagles were impressive from the free-throw line, sinking 22 of 25 (92 percent).

Niagara returns to action Nov. 21 when it hosts Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in its home opener at 7 p.m.
