FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara University men’s swimming and diving team (2-1, 1-0) won its second meet of the season late Friday in dramatic fashion, beating Fairfield University in the final event for the 123-118 victory. The women’s team (0-3, 0-1)) dropped a 141-99 meet to the Stags.
With the scored tied going into the final event, the 400 meter freestyle relay, the Purple Eagle team of freshman Zak Brown (Bakersfield, Calif.), sophomore Kevin Betts (Victor, N.Y.), freshmen Joe Moeller (Bethel Park, Pa.) and Ray DeWire (Tamaqua, Pa.) swam a 3:44.38 to win by over four seconds.
Niagara took eight first places in the meet led by double winners Brown and sophomores Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and James Polito (Reading, Pa.). Brown won the 800 meter free (8:59.05) and the 400 meter free (4:19.21). Garvey remained undefeated in individual events, winning the 200 meter IM (2:14.96) and the 200 breaststroke (2:32.32). Polito registered wins in the 50 meter free (24.80) and the 100 meter free (55.57).
Moeller remained unbeaten in the 200 free (2:03.18), while junior Dave Germin (Oswego, N.Y.) won the third consecutive time in one-meter diving (207.83).
On the women’s side, freshman Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.) won the 400 meter free (4:43.96) and finished second in the 800 meter free (9:37.83). Sophomore Mariah Glass (Oswego, N.Y.) took first in the 200 meter free (2:18.23) and second in the 200 meter backstroke (2:34.91).
The 400 meter free relay of junior Heather Link (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), Glass, freshman Sara Fortini (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and senior Kelly Kennedy (York, N.Y.) also took first in 4:20.27.
