Niagara University Men’s Soccer Drops Contest to No. 22 Binghamton

Sophomore Scott Devlin

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (0-6-0) lost to No. 22 Binghamton University (5-0-3), 5-0, Saturday at Niagara Field. With the win, the Bearcats extended the nation’s longest regular-season unbeaten streak to 19 games.

Binghamton took control of the contest early in the second half, scoring four of its five goals in a nine-minute period. Bearcat freshman Adam Chavez, who finished the game with two goals and two assists, beat Niagara goalkeeper Eric Sullivan (Traverse City, Mich.) with a low-driven shot in the 47th minute to open the second-half scoring.

Seven minutes following his first goal, Chavez slotted a one-on-one opportunity into the right side of the net, beating the Purple Eagle defense on a counterattack in the 54th minute. Off a clearance, sophomore midfielder Kyle Antos found a streaking Chavez on the left wing. Chavez attacked the Niagara net from the left, placing the ball to the left of a diving Sullivan.

Binghamton midfielders Bryan Arnault and Michael Austin added the final two Bearcat goals, both scored in the 56th minute.

Austin -- who had five points in the game -- scored Binghamton’s first goal in the 14th minute.

Niagara’s best scoring opportunities in the contest came midway into the first half when junior defender Mark Spooner (Mickleover, England) struck the left post on a 25-yard free kick and sophomore Kwame Oduro (Toronto) headed the ball into the arms of Binghamton goalkeeper Stefan Gonet from the six-yard box.

Shots were in favor of the Bearcats, 21-11. Making two saves, Gonet picked up his third shutout of the season. Sullivan made four saves for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara continues its three-game homestand, hosting cross-town rival University at Buffalo Wednesday at Niagara Field at 4 p.m. Admission is free to the contest.
