NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (7-4) fell to Atlantic-10 opponent St. Bonaventure (7-4) Wednesday, 20-3. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Purple Eagles.
St. Bonaventure remains unbeaten against Niagara in the four-game all-time series, and post a perfect 7-0 record against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams over the last two seasons.
Bonnies senior Laura Spaulding opened the game’s scoring at 28:54 with an assist from junior Kelly Chevez, who registered a game-high five assists.
Niagara junior Rachel Jones tied the game at 25:01 off a free position shot, before St. Bonaventure tallied eight unanswered goals. Niagara sophomore Erin Castor broke the scoreless skid at 8:27, notching her season’s fifth goal, with an assist from junior Ashley Baker.
St. Bonaventure scored three additional goals before halftime, holding the 12-2 lead at the break.
Baker was the lone Purple Eagle to tally a goal in the second half, finding the back of the net at the 20:58 mark, while the Bonnies’ offense maintained their pressure, scoring eight second-half goals.
The 17-point spread was two shy of Niagara’s all-time largest margin of defeat, recorded in a 24-5 loss to Mt. St. Mary’s, April 5, 1997.
Niagara returns to conference play this weekend, as it hosts Siena, Saturday at 1 p.m. and Marist, Sunday at 1 p.m. at Niagara Field on the campus of Niagara University.
