Women’s Lacrosse Comeback to Defeat Le Moyne

Junior Rachel Jones scored four goals, including the game-winner, in the 10-9 win over the Dolphins.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Rachel Jones (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) scored with 55 seconds remaining to give Niagara University (6-3, 2-2) a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Le Moyne College (7-4, 1-1) Saturday at Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles overcame a three-goal deficit with under 10 minutes remaining in the contest to defeat the Dolphins.

With Le Moyne leading 9-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Niagara began its comeback attempt, led by a goal by freshman Lindsay Hamann (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), who scored on a free-position shot, at the 9:21 mark of the second half.

Niagara then netted goals by Jones and Kelly Barber (Homer, N.Y./Homer) to even the game at 9-9, leading up to the game-winning goal by Jones.

With 57 seconds remaining in the second half, following a penalty called on Le Moyne defender Sonya Kilcourse in the Purple Eagles offensive third, Jones would take a pass from teammate Ashley Baker (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), fight through the Dolphin defense and shoot the ball past Le Moyne goalkeeper Erica Henderson to win the game.

The three-goal deficit was the largest margin the Purple Eagles have overcome thus far in this season.

Jones led Niagara with four goals in the victory, followed by two goals by freshman Jennifer Parks (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). Baker contributed with a goal and two assists.

After Niagara took a 6-4 lead early in the second half, Le Moyne scored five-straight goals to build the 9-6 lead. Freshmen Kristen Malecki and Amanda Keegam led Le Moyne with two goals a piece in the loss.

Niagara junior goalkeeper Michellie Nucci (Plainview , N.Y./Bethpage) made 12 saves to win her sixth game of the season.

The Purple Eagles face Howard Universtiy (1-7) Sunday at Niagara Field at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will mark on the second time Niagara has faced Howard.
