Niagara Lacrosse Defeats Canisius, 9-5

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s lacrosse team (5-3, 1-2) won its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season Monday, defeating Canisius College (0-8, 0-3), 9-5. Seven different Purple Eagles scored in the victory. 

Niagara junior Rachel Jones opened the game’s scoring off a free position shot at 28:34, but an unassisted goal by Canisius freshman Amanda Marts tied the game just 2:14 later. 

After more than seven minutes of the 1-1 deadlock, Niagara freshman Katelyn Primomo broke the tie at the 19:03 mark with her fifth goal of the season. Niagara scored the next three goals before a scoreless 11:25 ran off the clock, giving the Purple Eagles the 5-1 halftime lead. 

Niagara extended its lead to 6-1 early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Kathryn Kenneally at 28:26. After two Canisius goals, the two teams traded markers until Niagara junior Ashley Baker notched the game’s final tally with 7:11 remaining in regulation.  

Niagara outshot the Golden Griffins 25-16 in the contest, while causing nine of the Griffins 25 turnovers. Niagara junior goaltender Michelle Nucci made four saves to register her fifth win of the season.

Niagara returns to action this weekend, hosting Le Moyne Saturday at 1 p.m. and Howard Sunday at 1 p.m.
