ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s basketball team (6-3) had five players score in double digits as it rolled to a 111-75 victory over Little Three rival St. Bonaventure (0-8) Monday night at the Reilly Center.

The victory snapped a two-game road losing streak for the Purple Eagles and was the program’s first victory on the Bonnies home court since Dec. 11, 1990.

Senior Juan Mendez (Montreal/Florida Air Academy) scored a game-high 28 points to move into second on Niagara’s career scoring list. The 6-foot-8 forward had 1,738 career points and trails Niagara and NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy by 810 points.

Freshman Charron Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J./Roman Catholic [Pa.]) came off the bench for 19 minutes to score a career-high 21 points. Senior Alvin Cruz (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico/Florida Air Academy) and sophomore J.R. Duffey (Ft. Worth, Texas/North Crowley) each had 16 points, and senior David Brooks (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington) netted 10 points to move within 21 points of 1,000 career points.

Niagara blow open the game in the second half after scoring 22 of the first 27 points. Mendez tallied eight of his 12 second-half points during the stretch.

"We woke up and played pretty good basketball," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said. "Things went our way during the second half."

Leading 15-12 midway through the first half, the Purple Eagles went on a 9-2 run to open a 24-14 lead at the 8:56 mark. St. Bonaventure answered with a 13-3 run to take its largest lead of the game, 33-31, with 4:03 left in the half.

Niagara took the lead back on a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Cruz and then closed the half out scoring the Bonnies 12-4 for a 48-38 lead at halftime.

The Purple Eagles eclipsed the century mark for the second time this season and for the 62nd time in the program’s history. The 111 points were the most points scored since 1999 when Mihalich’s first Niagara team beat Marist 119-108 on Jan. 18.

Niagara concludes its three-game road swing with a 7 p.m. game Wednesday vs. Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion on the Lewisburg, Pa., campus.
