BUFFALO – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (4-13-2, 2-6-1) concluded the 2004 season Saturday, falling to crosstown rival Canisius College (5-11-1, 4-4-1), 3-1, at the Demske Sports Complex.
Leading the Golden Griffins in the victory was senior forward Chris Robey, who scored two of the three Canisius goals. In the 17th minute, Robey gave the Griffs a 1-0 lead, hitting a free kick from just outside the Niagara penalty area into the upper-right corner.
Sophomore forward Matt Stedman (Lockport) tied the game for the Purple Eagles in the 28th minute, scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
With the game tied, 1-1, Robey tallied the game-winning goal for the Griffs in the 34th minute. Taking a pass from freshman Ryan Miller, Robey hit a low shot past Niagara goalkeeper Eric Sullivan (Traverse City, Mich.), scoring his eighth goal of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Ibrahim Yusuf added the final goal for Canisius in the 64th minute, scoring off a corner kick.
The Golden Giffins outshot Niagara, 18-9, in the win, hitting 11 shots on goal.
Sullivan made eight saves in the loss. Canisius sophomore goalkeeper Adam Sleyzak made three saves for his fifth win of the season.
