NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams nearly made a clean sweep in events Saturday as the men sprinted past Canisius, 141-57, and the women rolled past both Canisius, 89-20, and Sacred Heart, 81-30. The men (2-0, 2-0) went undefeated placing first in every event, while the women (2-3, 1-1) were bested only twice.
Niagara won 16-straight events, 24 in all on a day where it seemed nothing could go wrong. The Purple Eagles posted 12 personal-best times bringing their three-meet total to 28.
"I am very proud of how both teams have been performing so far this year." Niagara head coach Pete Thompson said. "Our training intensity, meet intensity, and support for each other has been stellar."
Sophomore diver Emily Zimdahl (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) was impressive in her wins in both the one and three meter diving, winning by a combined 35 points. Sophomore Heather Link (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) topped the women’s performances winning the 200 individual medley in 2:20.23, the 200 backstroke in 2:18.44, and as a member of the 200 medley relay team (1:54.14).
On the men’s side, freshman Pat Garvey (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and junior Kevin Klein (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) each completed a trifecta. Garvey won the 200 free in 1:47.11 and the 200 butterfly in 2:06.57. Klein won the 1000 free in 10:47.89 and the 500 free in 5:05.55. Both were also on the 200 free relay team that won in 1:29.27.
The Niagara University women’s swimming and diving team will be in action again Nov. 6 when it competes in it’s third-straight double-dual meet when it hosts Siena and Canisius at 1 p.m. at the Oxy Aquatic Center on the Monteagle Ridge campus. The men will return Nov. 13 as both teams will compete against Manhattan and Canisius at 1 p.m. at the Oxy Aquatic Center.
