NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s soccer team (2-9-2, 0-2-1) lost its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season, losing 1-0 to Fairfield (5-4-2, 2-2-0) Friday at Niagara Field on the Monteagle Ridge campus.
A first-half goal by Fairfield sophomore forward Mike Troy led the Stags to the one-goal victory. The lone tally in the game came in the 35th minute. Freshman Sam Bailey took a shot on net and Troy sprang on the rebound and put it past diving Niagara goalkeeper Eric Sullivan (Traverse City, Mich.). The goal was the first of the season for Troy.
The Purple Eagles intensified their pressure in the second half, producing three good scoring opportunities. Junior forward Kwame Oduro (Toronto, Ont.) had his 15-foot shot saved in the 55 minute. Junior Mark Spooner (Mickleover, England) had a shot off a cornerkick in the 68 minute and junior Paul VandenBoomen (Victoria, B.C.) forced a save in the 87 minute on a cornerkick.
Niagara took 14 shots in the game, including six on goal. Fairfield had 15 shots, six shots on goal.
Fairfield junior goalkeeper Andrew Frankel made six saves for his second shutout of the season. Sullivan made five saves for Niagara in the loss.
The Purple Eagles return to action Sunday when they host Iona at 1 p.m. at Niagara Field. Admission is free.
