Poughkeepsie, NY (May 2, 2003) - The Niagara women's lacrosse team lost to Le Moyne 15-7 in the first round of the MAAC Tournament at Marist College's Leonidoff Field. The Purple Eagles finish the season at 10-6 (4-2 MAAC).
Le Moyne came into the tournament seeded number two while Niagara was number three.
Ashley Grosso (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) led Niagara in scoring netting three goals and adding one assist. One of the goals was on a free-possession.
Megan McNereny (Little York, NY/Homer) scored two goals while Sandra Gallegos (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Ashley Baker (W. Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) each tallied one goal. Gallegos also had two helpers.
Le Moyne was led in scoring by Colleen Sperry who had a game high six goals. Tara Wallberger netted four goals and Liz Hewitt had two goals.
Michelle Nucci (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) went the distance in net for Niagara making 16 saves.
Brandy Payne earned the win for Le Moyne in net stopping eight Purple Eagle shots.
Gallegos finishes the season with 29 goals and 37 assists for 67 points. McNerney led Niagara in goals with 42. Nucci played in all 16 games making 219 saves on 364 shots for a 9.03 goals against average.
In earlier action, fourth seed Marist upset number one seed Fairfield 11-9. Marist will play Le Moyne on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
