Niagara University, NY (April 1, 2003) -The Niagara women's lacrosse team won over Canisius 14-4 at Niagara Field. Niagara improves to 5-2 (1-0 MAAC) while Canisius falls to 0-4 (0-1 MAAC).
The Purple Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just 4:15 into the first half. Niagara held a 5-0 lead before Canisius tallied its first goal of the game.
Niagara went into half-time with a 7-2 lead.
The second half saw Niagara score two goals before Canisius answered with one its own. Niagara would hold the Griffs off the board until the final four minutes of the game.
Ashley Grosso (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W.Baker) led all scorers with four goals on four shots and adding four assists for eight points. Grosso also recovered one ground ball and caused one turnover.
Rachel Jones (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) netted four goals while Ashley Baker (W. Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored three.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Nucci (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) had a quiet day in net only facing seven Canisius shots making three saves. Niagara out-shot Canisius 29-7.
Erin Westenfield, Rachel Held, Gina Balducci and Stephanie Kott each had one goal for the Griffs.
Goalkeeper Sarah Royer played the first half for Canisius stopping six shots. Christine Moran played the second half making 14 saves.
Niagara will play Fairfield at home on April 5. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
