NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The string of bad luck continues for the Niagara University men’s soccer team, as it lost 1-0 to No. 10 Hartwick at Wright National Soccer Hall of Fame Field in Oneonta, N.Y. Saturday.
For the 10th time in the past five games, the Purple Eagles (0-7-1) hit the post on a scoring opportunity. Graduate student midfielder Ewan Henderson’s (Lincoln, England) 24-yard shot beat Hartwick goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, but ricocheted off the post midway into the second half. Henderson’s opportunity would have equalized the game, but the miss and eventual shutout extended Niagara’s goalless streak to five games.
"Some of these chances will turn and the goals will start going in," head coach Dermot McGrane said. "Eventually when they go in, we’ll be a very dangerous team."
With heavy rains hitting the Oneonta area, the game had to be relocated to the National Soccer Hall of Fame from the original site of Elmore Field on the Hartwick campus.
Hartwick (8-1-0) struck early with a goal just three minutes into the game. Midfielder Percy Avetrani’s curling corner kick found the head of defender Josh Herrera at the near post. Herrera’s header beat Niagara junior goalkeeper Dan O’Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and put the Purple Eagles behind early in the contest.
Off a restart, freshman midfielder Scott Devlin’s (Sarnia, Ont.) shot was able to beat the Hartwick wall but found the awaiting hands of goalkeeper Scott Carman, accounting for the Purple Eagles’ only other shot on goal.
In the game, Niagara was able to thwart the Hawk attack and gave up only three shots on goal, while taking two shots on the Hartwick net. Overall, Hartwick out shot Niagara, 10-5.
Carmen and Wagenaar combined for the shutout, both playing a half. Carmen made the only save for the two goalkeepers. O’Shea made three saves in the game for the Purple Eagles.
With a low-pressure defense and a very effective counter attack, Henderson and sophomore midfielder Sasha Kaplun (Toronto) were able to standout among the Niagara players, according to McGrane.
"We lost to a legitimate Top 20 team," McGrane said. "The fact that we were able to play with them shows what kind of a team we are."
Niagara begins the Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of its schedule Tuesday, when it hosts Canisius at 3 p.m. at Niagara Field. Admission is free to the game.
