BINGHAMTON, N.Y. –The Niagara University men’s swimming & diving team earned a spilt while the women were swept at today’s meet at the University of Binghamton’s West Gym Pool.
The men’s squad (1-1) fell to host Binghamton 136-85, but bounced back to defeat University of Vermont 146-73. Freshman Dave Germain (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) won both the one (190.1) and three-meter (143) dive events, junior Brian Griffin (Petersburg, Va./St. Vincent de Paul) placed second in both the 200 IM (2:08.40) and 100 breast stroke (1:02.17) and freshman Brandon Smith (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) finished second in both 200 free (1:53.99) and 500 free (5:20.30) events. The combination of junior Nate Katz (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls), sophomore Andrew Farnham (Sanborn, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), freshman Brandon Smith (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and freshman Scott Leslie (Marble Head, Mass./St. John's) won the 400 free relay in a time 3:26.69.
The women (0-2) fell to Binghamton 165-65 and came up short against Vermont 165-71. Junior Traci Liberi (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) placed second in 50 free (25.92) and 100 free (56.70) events and freshman Jody Kennis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:04.96).
"I was very pleased with our performance today," first-year head coach Pete Thompson said. "At this point in the season, I believe we are ahead of last year’s pace."
The Purple Eagle’s next action is this Firday as both the men and women host the Duquesne Dukes at Niagara’s Kiernan Pool. Meet time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
