JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Niagara baseball secured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference sweep over Saint Peter's 18-5, Sunday afternoon.
The Purple Eagles' improved to 19-15-1, 15-6 MAAC, while the Peacocks fell to 4-35, 0-21 MAAC.
After a scoreless first inning, Niagara broke through in the top of the second. Matthew Ganschow doubled down the left-field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Shawn Cameron single to right to make it a 1-0 game.
The Purple Eagles broke open a three-run inning in the top of the third. Kozar singled to third and a pair of walks loaded the bases. A fielder's choice by Ganschow scored Kozar, then Nate Milk singled home McKay, and Vivacqua drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Ganschow.
Saint Peter's got one back in the bottom half on Bobby Lavely's RBI single to bring the game to 4-1.
After a scoreless fourth Niagara bounced back with two more runs as Curtis McKay laced an RBI single to right that allowed both Nick Cote and Vivacqua to score.The Peacocks got on back in the bottom of the frame.
Cote singled to center to plate Milk in the sixth for Niagara's lone tally of the frame.
Niagara pushed across two more in the seventh. Konings doubled to right-center and scored on Kozar's single. Milk's fielder's choice scored Kozar.
Saint Peter's countered with three runs in the bottom half. A Doninger single that turned into a two-run play on an error in center, plus a Steve Polizzi RBI single off Nathan Harb, trimmed the deficit to four.
Niagara extended its lead with two more in the eighth. Kozar doubled and McKay singled him home, then Green added a sacrifice fly to score Kozar to make it 11-5.
The Purple Eagles put it away emphatically in the ninth, walking home three runs before Green delivered the final blow with a grand slam to make it 18-5.
