Niagara University, NY - Niagara baseball secured the series sweep over Marist with an 11-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Bobo Field.
The Purple Eagles improved to 16-15, 12-6 MAAC, while the Red Foxes fell to 14-23, 13-8 MAAC.
Niagara starter Gage Wheaton allowed a leadoff baserunner but got out of the jam to leave Marist scoreless to start the game.Â
The Purple Eagles responded in the bottom of the first with four runs to start the game off hot. Noah Konings got things going with a double down the left field line to plate Jacob Brooks. Curtis McKay followed that up with an RBI single to bring home Tyler Vivacqua. Jason Green capped things off with a two-RBI double to score Konings and McKay.
After a scoreless second, Niagara took control in the bottom of the third. Green ripped a three-run homer 391 feet over the left field fence to push the lead to seven, before Brooks hit a sac fly to bring home Matthew Ganschow. Vivacqua closed the inning with a two-run shot to right field to make it a 10-0 game after three.
Rees Kozar kept the runs coming in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer over the right field wall to move the lead to 11.
The Red Foxes got on the board in the top of the fifth with a homer off the bat of Brady Steinert, followed by TJ Bear and Nathan Lincoln scoring on two Purple Eagles errors to cut the lead to 11-3.
Wheaton's day came to an end after 4.2 innings of work, allowing three runs, one earned on eight hits with six strikeouts. Nathan Harb came in for relief, throwing 1.1 shutout innings.
Nate Bennett came in to start the seventh inning. Marist plated three runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI single from Kyle Pollack and a groundout from Scott Esposito.
Bennett threw 3.0 innings to close out the game and earned his second save of the season.
