Niagara Sweeps Merrimack in a Double Header

Niagara University, NY— Niagara (11-30, 8-16 MAAC) defeated Merrimack in a doubleheader 2-1 in game one and 10-3 in the nightcap on Friday at the Niagara Softball Field.
Game One
After three scoreless innings of softball that saw Niagara starter Sage Jackson punch out five batters, Merrimack got on the scoreboard first, scoring on a steal attempt of second that allowed the runner to come home.

Niagara knotted up the game at one in the sixth with a solo home run off the bat of Lindsay Mayo. Kaylee Haines came up clutch in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single to plate Sophia Marrero.

Jackson threw a complete game, striking out nine batters, while only allowing one run on three hits.

Game Two
Merrimack got on the board first in the nightcap with a solo homer from Sofia Paylan in the top of the second inning.

The Purple Eagles gained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, plating six runs. Haines got it started, scoring on an error followed by a sacrifice fly from Hailey Cenname. Mayo scored on a throwing error, Selah Moyer then singled to score Natasha Limbani. Haines recorded a two-RBI double to cap off the inning.

The Warriors tried to mount a comeback, scoring twice in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a double from Paylan. Niagara added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double from Shayna Myshrall to plate Limbani and a three run homer off the bat of Marrero.

Jenna Martin got the start in the nightcap for the Purple and White, throwing 4.1 innings, only allowing one run on one hit. Abbey Steen came in for relief, allowing two runs on five hits. Aubrey Tamayo came on for the final 1.1 innings of the game.

Niagara Notes
• Niagara is now 3-1 all-time against Merrimack.
• Jackson struck out a career-high nine batters in the game on victory.
• Haines recorded her first walk-off hit in her collegiate career.
• Moyer tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
