EMMITSBURG, Md. — Mount St. Mary's scored nine runs in the first inning to overwhelm Niagara 12-4 in baseball action Saturday at E.T. Straw Stadium.
How it Happened
The Mountaineers (9-12) took advantage of the Purple Eagles (4-14) early with a barrage that included a pair of home runs from Sam Grube, who finished with four RBIs. Nolan Book also homered and drove in five runs for Mount St. Mary's.
Niagara starting pitcher
Gage Wheaton (0-1) lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing five runs on one hit with four walks.
Johnny Montgomery and
Carmen Panaro also struggled in relief before Max Ramirez IV provided 6⅓ scoreless innings to stop the bleeding.
The Purple Eagles' offense was led by
Jacob Brooks, who went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Rees Kozar added two hits and scored twice, while
Carter Aarts contributed a run-scoring double. Niagara collected 10 hits but struck out 15 times and left 11 runners on base.
Serigne Sarre (2-3) earned the win for the Mountaineers, striking out 11 batters over five innings.

• Saturday's loss marks the first-ever loss to Mount St. Mary's for Niagara, snapping an eight-game win streak over the Mount.
• The Purple Eagles suffered their fourth loss in MAAC play this season after dropping only four games in league play in all of 2024.
• Ramierez recorded season-bests in innings pitched and strikeouts. His five K's are tied for the most by a Purple Eagle in an outing this season.
• Brooks improves his hit streak to seven games.
