HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The Niagara baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Purdue on Saturday at Ting Stadium, falling 16-4 in the opener before being shut out 9-0 in the nightcap.
How it Happened
In game one, the Purple Eagles (0-5) showed offensive life with 10 hits but couldn't keep pace with Purdue's explosive attack.
Curtis McKay went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while
Vincent Mauro and
Jacob Brooks each added two hits.
Camden Sanders provided a spark off the bench with his first home run of the season.
Starting pitcher
Evan Wilde (0-1) took the loss in the opener, allowing four runs on eight hits over three innings. The Purple Eagles' bullpen struggled to contain Purdue's offense, which broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning.
In the second game, Niagara (0-6) was limited to just three hits against Purdue's pitching combination of Easton Storey and Gavin Beuter. McKay continued his strong day with a double, his third of the season, while
Elijha Hammill and Brooks collected the other hits.
Matthew DelVecchio (0-2) kept the Purple Eagles in the nightcap early, allowing three runs over 4.2 innings while striking out two. However, Purdue pulled away late, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to secure the sweep.

• McKay led the Purple Eagles offensively, going 3-for-7 (.429) on the day with two doubles. He had a 2-for-3 performance in the opener and added another double in game two. McKay played both left field and first base, recording 15 putouts.
• Mauro went 2-for-6 (.333) in the doubleheader, with both hits coming in game one. He also drew a walk and handled two defensive chances at third base without an error.
• Hammill, the centerfielder reached base three times, going 2-for-6 (.333) with a walk. He also showed his speed on the basepaths with a stolen base in game one.
• The Purple Eagles turned four double plays across the two games (two in each), showing solid defensive execution.
• They had multiple batters with multi-hit games with McKay, Mauro, Brooks each recording two hits.
