Milk Has Career Day In Loss To Michigan State

East Lansing, MI—The Niagara baseball team fell to Michigan State in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday by a score of 7-6.

How it Happened

The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Tommy Takayoshi opened the inning with a single on a 3-2 pitch. Two pitches later, Nate Milk doubled home Takayoshi with the first run of the game. On the next pitch Nick Groves doubled home Milk to give Niagara a 2-0 lead.

Michigan State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the third on three hits.

Nick Monile opened the fourth inning with a bunt single. After a strikeout, Rees Kozar singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Takayoshi then loaded the bases with a walk. Milk stepped to the plate and blasted his first career homer to give Niagara a 6-3 lead in the top of the fourth.

The Spartans tied the game at six in the bottom of the fourth as they scored three runs on two hits.

Michigan State took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Groves doubled in the top of the ninth inning, but Niagara could not tie the game at seven.

Niagara Notes

·       Ryan Minckler was the first pitcher out of the pen for Niagara, he went 3.1 innings while allowing two earned runs on just two hits. He notched seven flyouts and three groundouts.

·       Zac Laird came out of the bullpen and went 1.2 innings while not allowing a run and giving up just one hit. He struck out a pair in the outing.

·       Milk is the second Purple Eagle this season to hit a grand slam for their first career homer. Monile hit his first career homer which was a grand slam against Richmond on Feb. 16.

·       Groves, Monile, and Milk all had two hits in the game while Brady Desjardins, Rees Kozar, and Takayoshi all had a hit.

·       Milk set a new career high with five RBI in the game.

·       Monile extended his hitting streak to 15 games, it is now tied for the longest among Purple Eagles this season.

·       The Niagara pitching staff stranded 11 Spartan runners in the game.

·       Niagara had five extra base hits in the game.
